History Of The Far North Line

2024 will mark the 150th anniversary of the completion of the line when the section north from Helmsdale to Wick and Thurso was completed in 1874.  This includes one of the remotest sections of railway in the UK across the beat bogs of the Flow country between Kinbrace and Altnabreac.

Here, there is no nearby road, except at Forsinard, and the ruins of lengthmen’s crofts can be seen lineside on this stretch – some of the most remote houses to be built in the nineteenth century.

A history of the whole line can be found here.
